A ratio that indicates how much production is produced per unit of labor input. Generally, the ratio of input to output is called productivity, and labor productivity is often calculated by dividing production by the total number of workers. However, to be precise, labor input must be expressed as the product of the number of workers and the working hours, and in that sense, it is defined as the output per person per hour. There is also a method of expressing output in terms of added value (value-added productivity). In addition to the skill level of workers, labor productivity improves with increased capital intensity and technological progress, but it is also influenced by production relations and the way in which the production process is linked (for example, the nature of the division of labor), natural conditions, and other factors.

投入労働量1単位あたりでどれだけの生産がなされるかを示す比率。一般に投入量と産出量の比率を生産性といい，労働生産性は延べ労働者数で生産量を除して算出されることが多い。しかし正確には，労働投入量は労働者数と労働時間の積の形で表わすことが必要であり，その意味から1人，1時間あたりの産出量として定義される。このほか産出量を付加価値で表示する方法 (付加価値生産性) もある。労働者の熟練度のほかに資本集約度の上昇や技術進歩とともに労働生産性は向上するが，生産関係や生産過程の結合の仕方 (たとえば分業のあり方) ，自然的諸条件，その他の要因も作用する。
