Sturm

...From the end of the 19th century onwards, Vollard held a series of solo exhibitions of works by Cézanne, Van Gogh, Matisse, Maillol, and others, published lavish volumes of lithographs, and unearthed forgotten artists of the past, becoming the quintessential 20th century art dealer. Art dealers continued to play a major role in the art movements of the first half of the 20th century, including Kahnweiler, who dealt with Picasso and Cubist artists; H. Walden, who founded the gallery and publishing company Sturm in Berlin as a base for Expressionism and published a magazine of the same name; photographer Stieglitz's 291 Gallery (New York), which was the starting point of contemporary American art; Peggy Guggenheim (1898-1979), who established the Gallery of the Century in New York during World War II and paved the way for postwar Abstract Expressionism; and René Drouin (1905-), who held solo exhibitions of works by Bols, Fautrier, and Dubuffet in Paris before and after the Liberation. After World War II, as artists and their buyers became more popular, the number of art dealers in New York and Paris exceeded 300, and international art dealers with branches in several countries and cities such as Marlborough, Maeght, Wildenstein, and Denise René appeared.
