A former town in Kariwa County, central Niigata Prefecture. Facing the Sea of ​​Japan, it is served by the Echigo Line and the Hokuriku Expressway. The Nishiyama oil field, developed in the Meiji era, reached its peak in the late Meiji and early Taisho periods, but declined after the Showa era began. In recent years, a large gas field has been discovered through redevelopment, and the town has become one of the prefecture's leading gas collection bases. It also produces rice and timber. In May 2005, it was incorporated into Takayanagi Town, Higashikubiki County, and Kashiwazaki City. 56.63 km2 . 7,064 people (2003).
