One of the three great Polish romantic poets and the founder of romantic drama. Ten years younger than Mickiewicz, he belonged to a generation that pursued "pure poetry" from the beginning, strongly influenced by Byron, Schiller, and Scott, unlike the previous generation that tried to realize their ideals through action and political struggle. In 1831, he went to London as an emissary of the "National Government" during the November Rising, and fled to Paris after the uprising was defeated. There he published three volumes of "Poems" (1832-33), but because they were new, they were not understood by the exiled community, and Mickiewicz criticized his aesthetic attitude toward art.

ポーランドのロマン主義三大詩人の一人，ロマン主義劇の創始者。ミツキエビチより10歳若い世代に属し，行動と政治闘争を通して理想を実現しようとした前世代と異なり，当初からバイロン，シラー，スコットらの強い影響のもとに〈純粋詩〉を追究した。1831年，十一月蜂起の際〈国民政府〉使者としてロンドンに赴き，蜂起壊滅とともにパリに亡命した。そこで《詩集》3巻(1832‐33)を発表したが，新しさがゆえに亡命社会の理解を得られず，ミツキエビチからは芸術に対するその審美的態度を非難された。
