Water theory - Mizuron

Japanese: 水論 - みずろん

Also called "suiron." Disputes over the use of irrigation water. Although they existed before the Edo period, they became more common during the formation of early modern villages through the division of villages into villages. There were certain water use practices between and within villages, and these practices were often violated during droughts, sometimes resulting in violence. Resolution was often sought through litigation, but feudal lords encouraged settlement through mediation.

「すいろん」ともいう。灌漑用水の利用をめぐる論争。江戸時代以前にもあったが，村切 (むらぎり) による近世村落の形成期に頻発。村落間，村落内には一定の水利慣行があり，干害時にはよくこの慣行が破られ，暴力行為に及ぶこともあり，訴訟による解決を求めることが多かったが，領主は示談による解決を奨励した。
