Japanese: オオヨシキリ(英語表記)Acrocephalus orientalis; oriental reed warbler
Acrocephalus orientalis; oriental reed warbler
Passerine, family Acanthidae. Total length 19cm. Formerly classified as a subspecies of the Western Reed Warbler A. arundinaceus, which lives in Europe and other parts of the western Eurasian continent. The head, back, wings, and tail are light brown, and the chest and belly are yellowish-white. It lives in reed beds and has a distinctive cry that sounds like "gyogyo, gyogyo, kekekeke," hence its common name "kokoko." It is polygamous, with one male mating with multiple females, and only the female takes care of the children. It breeds from Mongolia to Sakhalin Island, eastern China, and Japan, and spends the winter in areas from the western tip of India to Southeast Asia. In Japan, it migrates to reed beds in various places as a summer bird (→ migratory bird).
