A general term for insects belonging to the order Plecoptera. They are also called pterygota. Their body structure is relatively primitive. Their mouthparts tend to degenerate, but they have not lost their function. They are closely related to Orthoptera (crickets, grasshoppers, etc.), but their forewings and hindwings are almost identical in structure, and their leg bases are small, making them completely different. Modern stoneflies are directly descended from the Markemidae of the Permian proto-stonefly order Paraplecoptera. All adults are terrestrial, but as their larvae live in flowing water, adults are often found near water, often resting on nearby grass or trees.
