A Roman silver coin. It began to be issued around the time of the Punic Wars at the end of the 3rd century BC. It originally weighed 1/72 of a pound (about 4.55 g) and was worth 10 bronze ases. Over the course of the Republic, the denarius gradually lost weight, eventually weighing just 3.89 g. By this time, the ases had become worth only half their original value, so that by the time of the Gracchi brothers, the denarius was considered to be equal to 16 ases. The value of the coins continued to decrease, but the exchange rate between the two remained unchanged. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
