Japanese: ブトゥン[島]（英語表記）Pulau Butung

An island in eastern Indonesia, off the southeast coast of Sulawesi. It has an area of 4,200 km2 and a population of about 250,000. It is long and narrow from north to south, and borders Muna Island to the west across the narrow Butun Strait. The island is mountainous, with the highest point being Mount Kapalaogena (1,190m) in the north. Dowar Bay and Lawer Bay cut into it from the east. The inhabitants are people of southeastern Sulawesi descent, as well as Bugis and Makassar peoples, and are skilled sailors. The main city is Baubau on the southwest coast, a safe port from the western seasonal winds. [Bessagi Atsuhiko]

インドネシア東部，スラウェシ島南東岸にある島。面積4200km2，人口約25万。南北に細長く，狭いブトゥン海峡を隔てて西のムナ島と接する。地形は山がちで最高点は北部のカパラオゲナ山(1190m)。東からドワール湾，ラウェル湾が食い込む。住民はスラウェシ南東部系のほかにブギス族，マカッサル族などを含み，船乗りとして優れている。中心都市は南西岸のバウバウで，西の季節風に対し安全な港である。【別技篤彦】
