〘 noun 〙 (avant-garde, military term meaning "avant-garde") 1. An art movement that arose in France and other countries around the First World War. It rejected existing artistic ideas and forms and sought to create innovative art. A general term for Cubism, Futurism, Abstract Art, Surrealism, etc. Avant-garde. * Kafu Essays (1927-28) <Nagai Kafu> responds to criticism by Masamune and Tanizaki, "standing in the so-called avant-garde of the new literary world." 2. A person who is active at the forefront of the art world. Avant-garde. * Second Burari Hyotan (1950) <Takada Tamotsu> Kinuyo's Courage "In concept, there was quite a lot of avant-garde."
