Russian historian. Graduated from the Faculty of History and Literature at Moscow University (1910). He made outstanding achievements in the field of medieval agricultural history in England, writing such books as "The English Countryside in the 13th Century" (1935) and "Studies in the Agricultural History of 13th Century England" (1947). He served as professor of medieval history at his alma mater (1934-49) and head of the medieval history department at the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences (1936-52), and was an academician from 1946.
