A city in the northern part of Okinawa Island, Okinawa Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1970. The city center faces Nago Bay, and is backed by Paleozoic mountains. As the central city of the northern part of Okinawa Island, it has many national and prefectural offices, and is a bustling commercial city. In addition to orchids and chrysanthemums, fruit and vegetable cultivation is also thriving. There is a fishing port, and a lot of bonito is landed, and sea bream and prawn farming is also carried out. There are also factories that process beer, meat, cement, sugar, and pineapples. The Okinawa Expressway runs through the city, and the coast is a scenic spot with a swimming beach. The ruins of Nago Castle, located east of the city, are famous for their winter cherry blossoms, and nearby is the 300-year-old Himpun Gajumaru tree. In the southwest is the Bankoku Shinryokan, where the summit was held. In the eastern part of the city, in Henoko, Kushi region, is the US Marine Corps' Camp Schwab (which straddles Ginoza Village, Kunigami County, but most of it is in Nago City). In December 1999, the mayor of Nago announced that he would accept the offshore Henoko as an alternative site for the Futenma base, but no progress was made due to the fact that the construction method had not been finalized, the opposition of residents, and the impact on the natural environment (where a variety of living creatures, including the endangered dugong, live). After that, the Futenma base relocation issue underwent several twists and turns, but in December 2013, Prime Minister Abe met with Okinawa Governor Nakaima and presented a plan to reduce the burden on the base. Governor Nakaima highly praised this and announced his intention to approve the application for landfill work off the coast of Henoko in Nago City, and the prefecture officially approved the Henoko relocation. Under the Democratic Party administration (September 2009 to December 2012), Governor Nakaima opposed the Henoko relocation and called for the base to be relocated outside the prefecture, but under the Abe administration, he completely changed his stance. In the Nago mayoral election in February 2014, Susumu Inamine, who was opposed to the relocation, won. Inamine is prepared to use his mayoral authority to block the relocation. In a public opinion poll of Okinawans, 22% were in favor of relocating the US Futenma Air Base to Henoko in Nago City, while 66% were opposed. In the Okinawa gubernatorial election held in November 2014, Takeshi Onaga, who declared that he would revoke the landfill permit off the coast of Henoko, was elected. 210.90 km2 . 60,231 people (2010). → Henoko relocation issue → Related article Nagoran Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
