〘Noun〙① A long piece of paper made by joining together horizontally and rolling it up. Also, a piece cut from that. Often used for letters. ※Zappai・Azumakarage (1755) "Every time I try to woo someone, the roll gets thinner." ② Paper used to roll and wrap things. ※Taka (1953)〈Ishikawa Jun〉IV "When I checked the characters printed on the roll paper" ③ A secret word used by thieves for dried bonito flakes . 〔Nihon Kangōshū (1892)〕※Rakugo・Konnyaku Mondō (1894)〈Tachibanaya Enkyō IV〉 "'It's like I've seen a rakugo story. Katsubushi is' 'It's also called 'glossy writing' or 'rolled writing' . It's about oysters."
