Iikura

Japanese:
Iikura
A district in the northern part of Minato Ward, Tokyo. Currently the area of Azabudai and Higashi-Azabu. The name comes from the fact that this area was once the rice paddy of Ise Shrine, and had rice warehouses for offerings to the gods. During the Edo period, it developed as a town on the route from the Tokaido to Toranomon and Akasaka. Even today, it is a busy road leading from the city center to the Keihin National Highway. In 1894, the University of Tokyo Astronomical Observatory was opened. In 1924, the Tokyo Astronomical Observatory (now the National Astronomical Observatory) moved to Mitaka City, and the Japanese Geodetic Datum was established on the site.
