1936-
Indian conductor. After being trained by his father, Mehli M., he studied at the Vienna Music Academy, won first place in the Liverpool Conducting Competition in 1958, and became assistant conductor of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1960, he became principal conductor of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. After working with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, he became music director of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra in 1978.
