The former name of a town (Kisagata-machi) in Yuri-gun, in the southwestern tip of Akita Prefecture. Currently, it is Kisakata-machi in Nikaho City, and occupies the southern part of the city. In 1896 (Meiji 29), Shiokoshi Village was incorporated as a town to form Kisakata-machi. In 1955 (Showa 30), it merged with Kamihama and Kamigo. In 2005 (Heisei 17), it merged with Nikaho and Konoura to form a city, and became Nikaho City. The name Kisakata is said to have come from the fact that many silkworm shells were once caught in this area, and changed from Kisakata to Kisakata. The JR Uetsu Main Line and National Route 7 (Sakata National Route) run almost parallel to each other along the Sea of Japan. The area is a mudflow topography caused by the Chokai volcano, and the mud layers were eroded by the sea to form rock islands, creating the landscape of the 88 lagoons and 99 islands. The natural beauty of that time is also described in Matsuo Basho's Oku no Hosomichi. A direct hit earthquake on June 4, 1804 (Bunka 1) caused the land to rise 2.5 meters, turning the lagoon into flat land. Even today, small islands covered with pine trees are scattered among the rice paddies. This area is part of Chokai Quasi-National Park and is designated as a national natural monument. There is a monument with Basho's haiku at Kanmanji Temple, and Naso's Shiratakidani is a national scenic spot. In addition to rice cultivation, coastal fishing and aquaculture are also practiced.
