The district capital of Lower Saxony in northwestern Germany. Population 58,800 (2000). Located about 40 km southwest of Hanover, on the banks of the Weser River. The Hellweg, the most important military road in the Middle Ages, was built at the point where it crossed the Weser River in the Weser Mountains, and commercial construction began around 1200, leading to a flourishing commerce. The city is a railway crossing, and industries such as wood processing, food, carpets, and pottery are carried out here. In 1284, 130 children went missing in this town. The cause is unclear, but it is said to be related to the German colonization of the East and the Children's Crusade. This incident became the legend of the Mousetrap (Pied Piper), and was featured in Grimm's fairy tales and Browning's poems, making the town known around the world. The city still has buildings such as the Weser Renaissance-style Mousetrap House (built 1602-03), and a skit based on the legend is performed in front of the Marktkirche at noon on Sundays from June to September.
