Hameln - Hameln (English spelling)

The district capital of Lower Saxony in northwestern Germany. Population 58,800 (2000). Located about 40 km southwest of Hanover, on the banks of the Weser River. The Hellweg, the most important military road in the Middle Ages, was built at the point where it crossed the Weser River in the Weser Mountains, and commercial construction began around 1200, leading to a flourishing commerce. The city is a railway crossing, and industries such as wood processing, food, carpets, and pottery are carried out here.

In 1284, 130 children went missing in this town. The cause is unclear, but it is said to be related to the German colonization of the East and the Children's Crusade. This incident became the legend of the Mousetrap (Pied Piper), and was featured in Grimm's fairy tales and Browning's poems, making the town known around the world. The city still has buildings such as the Weser Renaissance-style Mousetrap House (built 1602-03), and a skit based on the legend is performed in front of the Marktkirche at noon on Sundays from June to September.

ドイツ北西部、ニーダーザクセン州の郡庁所在都市。人口5万8800（2000）。ハノーバー南西方約40キロメートル、ウェーザー川の河畔に位置する。中世の最重要軍事道路ヘルウェークが、ウェーザー山地中でウェーザー川を越える地点に発生し、1200年ごろから計画的に建設され、商業が栄えた。鉄道の交差点をなし、木材加工、食品、じゅうたん、陶器などの工業が行われる。

　1284年、この町で130人の子供が行方不明になった。その原因については、ドイツの東方植民や少年十字軍に関連づけて説明されているがさだかではない。この事件が「ネズミ捕り（笛吹き）男」の伝説となり、グリムの童話やブラウニングの詩に取り上げられて、この町の名は世界中に知られるようになった。市内にはウェーザー・ルネサンス様式の「ネズミ捕り男の家」（1602～03建築）などが残り、6～9月の日曜正午にマルクト教会前で伝説にちなむ寸劇が演じられる。
