Japanese: 偽遺伝子 - にせいでんし/じゃんくいでんし（英語表記）pseudogene

A gene that has a base sequence similar to that of a normal gene, but is not transcribed into mRNA and does not express any information. It is also called a junk gene. It is thought to arise when mutations accumulate in duplicated genes, or when mRNA is converted to DNA by reverse transcriptase and incorporated into chromosomal DNA. In humans, the well-known example is the globin pseudogene group.

通常の遺伝子に類似した塩基配列をもちながら、mRNAに転写されず、情報が発現されることのない遺伝子。ジャンク(がらくた)遺伝子とも呼ばれる。重複遺伝子に突然変異が蓄積したり、mRNAが逆転写酵素によってDNAになり染色体DNAに組み込まれることによって生じると考えられている。ヒトではグロビンの偽遺伝子群などが有名。
