Died 1499. Florence, Italy. Florentine painter. Mosaicist. Though he is said to have been a pupil of Domenico Veneziano, he was also influenced by Castagno and Piero della Francesca. In 1448 he joined the Guild of St. Luke in Florence. He opened up new horizons in landscape depiction, and in his early works such as "The Nativity" (1460-62, Santissima Annunziata, Florence) and "Madonna and Child" (c. 1465, Louvre Museum), he succeeded in expressing landscapes with clear and realistic depictions that were in line with the reality of nature, using a unique coloring technique. He also depicted figures with sharp and delicate lines, leaving behind masterpieces such as the aforementioned "Madonna and Child" and "Portrait of a Woman" (National Gallery, London). In "The Annunciation" (66-73, San Miniato), he showed excellent formative effects using paint solvents that he had devised himself. It is known from his Recorde (49-91) that he devoted himself to the study of solvents and techniques. He also worked on murals, mosaic decorations, and stained glass. From 83 AD he was in charge of the mosaic decorations of the Baptistery of San Giovanni in Florence, but in his later years his paintings were influenced by his pupil Ghirlandaio and lacked vitality.

イタリアのフィレンツェ派の画家。モザイク師。ドメニコ・ベネチアーノの弟子とされるが，カスターニョやピエロ・デラ・フランチェスカからも影響を受けた。 1448年フィレンツェの聖ルカ画家組合に加入。風景描写に新生面を開き，その初期の作品『キリスト降誕』 (1460～62，フィレンツェ，サンティシマ・アヌンツィアータ聖堂) や『聖母子』 (65頃，ルーブル美術館) などでは，独特の彩賦法による自然の実感に即した写実描写で明澄な風景表現に成功している。また人物表現でも，人物像を鋭い精妙な線で描いて，先の『聖母子』や『婦人像』 (ロンドン，ナショナル・ギャラリー) のような傑作を残した。さらに『聖告』 (66～73，サン・ミニアート聖堂) では，自己の工夫した絵画溶剤を用いてすぐれた造形効果をみせている。彼が溶剤や技法の研究に専念したことは，『覚え書』 Recorde (49～91) から知られている。壁画，モザイク装飾，ステンドグラス制作などにも従事した。 83年以降，フィレンツェのサン・ジョバンニ洗礼堂のモザイク装飾主任となるが，晩年の絵画作品は，弟子のギルランダイオの影響を逆に受けて精彩を欠いた。
