Born: August 2, 1897, Seine-et-Oise, Chaville [Died] March 12, 1990. Paris. French poet and journalist. In 1919, together with A. Breton and L. Aragon, he founded the magazine Literature, in which he published his first automatist work, Les Champs magnétiques (Magnetic Fields), which he co-authored with Breton, and which played a decisive role in early Surrealism. Gradually distancing himself from the group, he wrote the novel Le Bon Apôtre (1923) and the collection of poems Georgia (26), among others. In addition to the collection of his poetry Poèmes et Poésies 1917-1973 (73), he also wrote excellent essays on writers such as Apollinaire (28), Lautréamont (29), Baudelaire (31), and Labiche (45).
