In August 1522, the Portuguese signed a treaty with the Sultanate of Padjajaran to use the city as a trading post, but before the fortress could be built, the Islamic army led by Fatahillah captured the city, expelled the Portuguese, and renamed it Jayakarta (meaning "Great Victory"). This is said to have happened on June 22, 1527, and is now designated as the anniversary of the founding of the city of Jakarta. …
