It is a dialect of Middle Iranian, and was the language of Sassanid Persia (226-651). Its core sources are Zoroastrian texts, but it also contains secular texts. It is written in Aramaic characters, but many Aramaic forms are used as ideograms, making it a complex writing system that is extremely difficult to decipher. The name Pahlavī (or Pehlībi) originally comes from a moniker meaning "of Parthia." [Yoichi Tsuge] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
