The capital of Santander State in north-central Colombia. It is located about 300 km north-northeast of the capital Bogotá, on the western slope of the northern part of the Eastern Andes Mountains, at an altitude of about 959 m. It was founded in 1622. It has developed rapidly since the second half of the 19th century. It is currently the commercial and industrial center of a fertile agricultural region, mainly producing coffee and tobacco, and in addition to distributing agricultural products, it also manufactures tobacco (cigars and cigarettes), textiles, straw hats, iron products, etc. It is the location of the Industrial University of Santander (1947). It is connected by rail to the river port of Puerto Wilches on the Magdalena River, and by road to other cities in the country and Venezuela. Population: 337,979 (1985).
