This dance is performed with a horse with a head and tail attached to the front and back of an oval bamboo ring at the waist, and a person riding the horse. It has been passed down in Hokkaido and the Tohoku region, and there are different forms in each region. The Shiranuka Koma Dance of Shiranuka Town, Hokkaido, is said to have been created in the Taisho era based on the Nanbu Koma Dance of Aomori Prefecture, and depicts a young horse leaving the stable and leaving the pasture to spend a day having fun, and is performed at various times throughout the year. The Nanbu Koma Dance, which is passed down in Towada City, Hachinohe City, and Kuraishi, Gonohe Town, in the former Nanbu Domain territory of Aomori Prefecture, depicts the Nomaoi, where wild horses are chased and captured, and is danced at the annual festivals of each shrine. The Takizawa Koma Dance of Takizawa City, Iwate Prefecture, which was also in the former Nanbu Domain territory, is also said to have started as a dance representing Nomaoi. In Noshiro City and Kitaakita City in Akita Prefecture, it is also danced during the Bon Festival together with lion dances and slave dances, and many dancers dressed as warriors perform vigorous jumping. Another dance performed with horses attached to the waist, similar to Komaodori, is Harukoma, a traditional Japanese dance performed on the streets during the New Year and Little New Year, and is performed as a door-to-door entertainment event during the New Year and Little New Year. The Harukoma dances of Aikawa, Sado City, Niigata Prefecture, and Ichinose Takahashi, Koshu City, Yamanashi Prefecture, are well known. In addition, dances with similar costumes are performed in horse dances such as Juriuma, which is performed on the 20th day of the lunar New Year in Okinawa Prefecture, and in festivals in East Asia and Southeast Asia, including China, and carnivals in various parts of Europe.
