It is a deciduous shrub of the Caprifoliaceae family (APG classification: Caprifoliaceae). It is about 2 meters tall and has six grooves on the trunk. The flowers are borne in pairs at the end of short stalks and open in May and June with a tubular corolla. It is endemic to Japan, distributed in Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu west of the Kanto region, and grows on limestone ground. A related species is known in central and western China. The genus Deutzia is distinguished from the genus Deutzia by its unique pollen shape, and there are about 10 species distributed in the temperate zone of East Asia.

スイカズラ科(APG分類:スイカズラ科)の落葉低木。高さ2メートルほどで、幹に6本の溝がある。花は短い柄の先に二つずつつき、5~6月に開き、花冠は筒状。日本の特産種で、関東地方以西の本州、四国、九州に分布し、石灰岩地に生える。近縁種は中国中西部に知られている。イワツクバネウツギ属は花粉が特異な形態をもつなどの特徴を備え、ツクバネウツギ属とは区別され、東アジアの温帯に約10種分布する。
