It is an island in the Habomai Islands, located off the coast of Cape Nosappu on the Nemuro Peninsula in eastern Hokkaido. It lies about 7 km northeast of Cape Nosappu and has an area of about 14 square km. It is roughly a square with sides of about 3 km, and consists of an uplifted plateau with four vertices. The highest point is 18 meters above sea level. At the end of World War II (1945), the population was 1,075. The surrounding sea area is a good fishing ground for kelp, herring, salmon, trout, surf clams, etc. Bokisenbe Bay, which opens to the southwest, is a good anchorage, and the fishing village of Zeikomae is located there, making it the center of the island. Before the war, it belonged to Habomai Village, Hanasaki District, under the jurisdiction of the Nemuro Subprefecture (now the Nemuro Development Bureau), but after the war, it was incorporated into Nemuro City in 1959 (Showa 34). However, after the war, Japan no longer had administrative control over the island, and it came under the control of the Soviet Union and then Russia, and is called Tanfil'eva Island (Остров Танфильева).
