Eskimo‐Aleut

Japanese: エスキモー･アレウト語族 - エスキモーアレウトごぞく（英語表記）Eskimo‐Aleut

It consists of Eskimo and Aleut. The similarities between the two languages were noticed as early as the second half of the 18th century, but the first person to attempt to prove their cognate origin was Rasmus K. Rask (1787-1832), a famous scholar of Indo-European comparative linguistics. Rather than branching off from proto-Eskimo-Aleut, it is assumed that there was another cognate language in ancient times, and that both proto-Eskimo and proto-Aleut may be merely small fragments of an ancient dialect continuum that probably existed near the Bering Strait.

エスキモー語とアレウト語からなる。両者の類似はすでに18世紀後半に気づかれているが，初めて同系の証明を企てたのは，印欧比較言語学史に有名なラスクRasmus K.Rask(1787‐1832)である。原エスキモー･アレウト語から二岐的に分かれたというよりむしろ，古くはさらに別の同系の言語があったと推定され，原エスキモー語も原アレウト語もベーリング海峡近辺におそらく存在した古い方言連続体の小断片にすぎぬものかもしれない。
