A monk from Goryeo (Korea). His posthumous name was Daikaku Kokushi. He was the fourth son of Emperor Munjong (reigned 1046-1083), became a monk at Reitsu-ji Temple, and was appointed as the head priest of the Yusei monks. In 1085, he traveled to Song China by sea and studied the Huayan doctrine under Jogen (1011-1088) at Eiin-ji Temple. He also studied the Tendai doctrine under Jiben Jukan, the precepts under Reishi Gensho (1048-1116), and Zen under Kinzan Ryogen (1032-1098), Huirin Ensho, and others. Three years later, he returned to Korea with about 1,000 volumes of Buddhist scriptures and established the Kyozotokan (Divination Office) at Heungwangsa Temple to publish them, making a great contribution to the development of Buddhism during the Goryeo period. His works include the New Compendium of the Records of Various Religious Treasures (Gicheonroku) in two volumes and the 22-volume Enshu Monrui (Enshu Monrui) (two volumes remain), which are valuable sources of information on Korean Buddhism.
