This is a register of red seal letters issued by the Edo Shogunate in the early modern period to Japanese ships travelling to various regions of the South Seas in order to control trade. The original was a hand-copied copy by Ishin Suden and is kept in the Konchiin temple of Nanzen-ji Temple in Kyoto. It is an Important Cultural Property. Suden was invited to Sunpu in 1608 (Keicho 13) and ordered by Tokugawa Ieyasu to travel abroad and back. This register records the issuance of red seal letters from 1604 to 1616 (Genna 2), as well as the red seal ship owners, destinations, and brokers. The first half is called the "Foreign Stamp Register" and the second half is called the "Foreign Voyages Register." It is an extremely valuable historical document of the red seal ship trade, and it reveals 80 red seal ship owners and a total of 178 ships that traveled abroad.
