A sport in which skis towed by a motorboat are used to glide across the water. There are various theories about its origin, but it is closely related to the development of motorboats. Around the middle of the 19th century, when motorboats became common as a form of public transportation, it became popular to enjoy the speed of ski-like aquaplanes pulled by a motorboat. In 1924, American Fred Waller improved on this aquaplane, patenting it as the Dolphin Aquaski. This is said to be the prototype of waterskiing. Around the same time, in France, people were enjoying riding snow skis towed by boats on lakes. This is said to be the beginning of waterskiing in Europe. After World War II, the motorboat boom in America occurred, and the number of waterski enthusiasts also increased rapidly.

In 1939, the United States Water Ski Association was founded, and since then, national and international open competitions have been held every year except during World War II. In 1949, the first World Championships were held in Jean-les-Pins, France. In 1955, the International Water Ski Union of Europe and the Water Ski Association of the United States merged to form the World Water Ski Union (WWSU). Since then, World Championships have been held every two years, with the United States dominating the sport.

The first water skiing tournaments in Japan were held after the Second World War by the US military stationed in the country, at Lake Ashi and Lake Biwa. The Japan Water Ski Federation was formed in 1955, and championships have been held every year since. In 1958, Japan joined the World Water Ski Union, and in 1959, it sent its first athletes to the championships in Turin, Italy.

The three main events in the competition are slalom, trick riding, and jumping, and the overall score of these three events is the deciding factor. There are also long-distance races, such as the 200 km race in Miami Beach and the English Channel crossing race.

Skis come in one (monoski) or two (pair skis), and are divided into competition and standard (general) types. The latter are 175 cm long and 17 cm wide, and are made of plywood or plastic. A rubber fastener in the middle secures the feet. The tow rope is 5.5-6.5 mm in diameter and 23 m long, and the skier holds onto it by a handle at the end. Boats are usually operated at speeds of 24-58 km/h. Life jackets are also required. Wetsuits are an essential part of training, as they allow skiers to ski all year round.

モーターボートで曳航(えいこう)されるスキーに乗り、水上を滑走するスポーツ。その発生については、いろいろの説があるが、モーターボートの発展と密接な関係がある。モーターボートが一般の乗り物として普及してきた19世紀なかばごろ、スキー板に似たアクアプレーン（波乗り板）をモーターボートに引かせてスピードを楽しむことが流行した。このアクアプレーンを1924年アメリカのフレッド・ウォーラーが改良し、ドルフィン・アクアスキーと名づけて特許をとった。これが水上スキーの原型といわれている。同じころ、フランスでは湖上でボートに引かせたスノースキーに乗って楽しんでいた。これがヨーロッパでの水上スキーの始まりとされている。第二次世界大戦後アメリカでは、モーターボートブームがおこるとともに、水上スキー愛好者も急増した。

　1939年アメリカ水上スキー協会が設立され、以後、第二次世界大戦中を除いて毎年アメリカ国内および国際オープン競技会が開催されている。1949年にはフランスのジャン・レ・パンで第1回世界選手権大会が開かれた。1955年ヨーロッパの国際水上スキー連合とアメリカの水上スキー協会とが合併することになり、新たに世界水上スキー連合（WWSU）が発足した。以後2年目ごとに世界選手権大会が開かれているが、アメリカが圧倒的強さを誇っている。

　日本では第二次世界大戦後、アメリカ駐留軍が芦(あし)ノ湖、琵琶(びわ)湖などで行ったのが最初で、1955年（昭和30）には日本水上スキー連盟が結成され、以後毎年選手権大会が開かれている。1958年には世界水上スキー連合に加入し、59年にはイタリアのトリノの選手権大会に初めて選手を送っている。

　競技はスラローム（回転）、トリック・ライディング（曲乗り）、ジャンプの3種が代表的な種目で、この3種目の総合得点で争われる。このほか長距離レースがあり、マイアミビーチの200キロメートルレース、イギリス海峡横断レースが有名である。

用具

スキーは1本（モノスキー）と2本（ペアスキー）のものがあり、それぞれ競技用とスタンダード型（一般用）に分かれている。後者は長さ175センチメートル、幅17センチメートルで、合板材・プラスチックなどでつくられている。中央のゴムの締め具で足を固定している。トー・ロープ（引き綱）は直径5.5～6.5ミリメートル、長さは23メートルで、スキーヤーは綱の先の把手(とって)を握って滑る。ボートは普通、時速24～58キロメートルのスピードで操作される。救命胴衣も必要である。ウェットスーツは、着用すると一年中スキーができるので、トレーニングには欠くことができない。
