A passerine bird of the family Flycatcher (illustration). Total length is about 15 cm. Sexes are different. Males have a silvery-gray head, black throat and cheeks, a blackish-brown back, and prominent white spots on the wings. The chest and belly are bright reddish brown. Females are gray-brown overall with white spots on the wings. They breed in southeastern Siberia, Primorsky Krai, and northern China, and migrate to Japan, southern China, Taiwan, and Southeast Asia in winter. They arrive in Japan as winter birds throughout the country in October and November. They live mainly in bright forests and cultivated fields on plains and mountains, and in parks in urban areas.

スズメ目ヒタキ科の鳥（イラスト）。全長約15cm。雌雄異色。雄は頭頂部が銀灰色で，のどとほおは黒く，背は黒褐色で翼によく目だつ白斑がある。胸から腹にかけては鮮やかな赤褐色をしている。雌は全体的に灰褐色で，翼に白斑がある。シベリア南東部，沿海州，中国北部などで繁殖し，冬季，日本，中国南部，台湾，東南アジアに渡る。日本には冬鳥として10,11月に全国各地に渡来する。おもに平地や山地の明るい林や耕地，市街地の公園にすむ。
