The name of a folk song from Miyako Island and the Yaeyama Islands in Okinawa, or the name of a group dance created in Okinawan theater. As a folk song, in Miyako Island it was originally called "ayago" and is generally called "aagu," and is used as a general term for songs other than divine songs such as "pyashi," "fusa," and "neeri." Many of them have a strong historical character praising worldly heroes, or sing about aspects of the lives of the common people, such as prayers for bountiful harvests and pre-celebrations, prayers for safe voyages, and weaving. In the Yaeyama Islands, it is also called "ayu" or "ayu," and is sung at agricultural ceremonies, voyage safety, and celebrations for new construction.
