Japanese: マルバノキ（英語表記）Disanthus cercidifolius Maxim.

A deciduous shrub of one genus and one species in the Hamamelidaceae family that has beautiful reddish purple flowers when the leaves change color in autumn. Also known as Benihama. The Japanese name means "round-leaf tree" and is based on the dialect name of the Kiso region. It grows to a height of 3-5m, with thin twigs that are purple-brown, and the tips of the current year's branches fall off and lack true terminal buds. The leaves are alternate on 2-9cm stalks, broadly oval with entire edges, heart-shaped at the base, 4-10cm long and 5-12cm wide, with 5-7 palmately shaped mid-veins. In October and November, when the leaves turn reddish yellow, two reddish purple flowers bloom back-to-back at the end of short stalks that emerge from the axils of the current year's or previous year's branches.
