Cup fungi

Japanese: 盤菌類 - ばんきんるい（英語表記）cup‐fungi

A fungus whose fruiting body (ascocarp) becomes a teacup-shaped ascocele. It is classified in the subphylum Ascomycota. Inside the dish-shaped ascocele is an exposed hymenium, with countless long and slender ascoceles lined up. The ascoceles are single-walled and usually have lateral filaments. Many of these are relatively large for an ascocele fungus, and are often collected together with mushrooms under the name Chawantake. There are two types of ascocele apical structure: petalous ascoceles, which have a cap-shaped valve at the tip and open when mature to release spores, and apetalous ascoceles, which simply split vertically at the tip.

子実体(子囊果)が茶わん状の子囊盤となる菌類。子囊菌亜門に分類されている。皿状の子囊盤の内側には裸出した子実層があり，細長い子囊が無数に並んでいる。子囊は一重壁で普通は側糸をもつ。子囊菌類として比較的大型のものが多く，チャワンタケと呼ばれ，キノコといっしょに採集されることが多い。子囊の先端構造に2種があり，先端にキャップ状の弁があって，成熟すると弁が開いて胞子を射出する有弁子囊と，先端が単に縦に裂けるだけの無弁子囊とに分かれる。
