1821‐56 Czech journalist, writer, and politician. He stayed in Moscow for a year from 1843, but became disappointed with Tsarist Russia, became critical of Pan-Slavism, and advocated for the independence of the Czech people. During the revolutionary period of 1848-49 in Prague, he was editor of the Czech language newspaper Volkszeitung and represented Czech liberals as a member of the Austrian Imperial Diet. After the revolution was suppressed, he continued to vehemently criticize the government and Catholic clergy under the Bach regime, and was imprisoned in Brixen (now Bressanone) in South Tyrol from 1851 to 1855.
