Chromium hydroxide

Chromium hydroxide

It is a hydroxide of chromium, but divalent and trivalent chromium compounds are known.

(1) Chromium(II) hydroxide: Chemical formula Cr(OH) 2 , weight 86.2. A yellow precipitate obtained by adding an alkali to an air-free aqueous solution of chromium(II) salt. When dried over sulfuric acid while passing hydrogen through it becomes a brown powder. Insoluble in water and dilute acids. A strong reducing agent.

(2) Chromium(III) hydroxide Its chemical formula is Cr(OH) 3 and formula weight is 103.03, but in practice it is difficult to obtain this composition . When an aqueous solution of chromium(III) salt is neutralized by adding an alkali and then hydrolyzed, a gray-green precipitate of chromium(III) oxide hydrate CrO3.nH2O is produced, which is generally called chromium(III) hydroxide . It is insoluble in water. When newly produced, it is easily soluble in acid, but becomes less soluble if left for a long time. It is an amphoteric substance that dissolves in alkali hydroxide. Both (1) and (2) are dehydrated to chromium(III) oxide when heated in air.
