During the colonial period, architectural styles from each region were transplanted, and simple houses and churches made of wood or stone were built. Around the time of independence, the so-called Colonial Style, which imitated the Georgian style of England, was born, but in the early 19th century, Pierre Charles L'Enfant (1754-1825) and B.H. Latrobe, who came to America, brought the International Style. Around the time of the Civil War, an eclectic mix of Greek, Gothic, and Renaissance styles was seen, as represented by Richard Morris Hunt (1828-95). …

…Under the federal system, each state had to be sensitive about the location of the central government, but as a compromise between the North and South, the Congress decided in 1890 to locate the site on the banks of the Potomac River, roughly in the center of the North and South. The following year, President Washington himself designated a 10-mile square district, received land from Maryland and Virginia, and a city plan was created under the French engineer Major Pierre Charles L'Enfant. Washington was the first modern capital city to be built based on a city plan. …
