Suikoden Mono - Suikoden Mono

Japanese: 水滸伝物 - すいこでんもの

A general term for novels that adapted the Chinese Ming Dynasty novel "Suikoden" to suit the Japanese climate. Ukiyo-zoshi, which began with Saikaku's "Koshoku Ichidai Otoko," lost its initial vitality toward the end of the Hachimonjiya series and could not escape the category of stereotypical stories, so it stagnated and declined. The reading world had long been waiting for a breath of fresh air, but in the mid-18th century, yomihon (reading books) appeared, mainly in Kyoto and Osaka, that had elements of thought, legend, and history not seen in ukiyo-zoshi, and used a style that combined Japanese, Chinese, and elegant customs.

中国明代の小説《水滸伝》を日本の風土にあわせて翻案した小説類の総称。西鶴の《好色一代男》に始まる浮世草子は，八文字屋本の末期に至ると当初の活力を失い類型的な気質（かたぎ）物の範疇から抜け出すことができず，沈滞し衰微するばかりであった。読書界は新風を待つこと久しかったが，18世紀中ごろ，浮世草子には見られなかった思想性，伝奇性，歴史性を持ち，和漢雅俗折衷の文体を用いる読本（よみほん）が京坂を中心に発生した。
