A Spanish Franciscan friar, he traveled to New Spain (Mexico) in 1524 with 11 companions and spent the rest of his life preaching to the natives. In the early days of the conquest, Motlinha always stood by the natives and tried to protect them from the violence and unjust exploitation of the conquerors. His violent temper led him to openly confront the administrative authorities. He also wrote the first history of New Spain based on pictorial documents from before the conquest and materials collected by his companions.
