The capital of the ancient North Indian kingdom of Kosala. It is called Shravasti in the Chinese translation of the Buddhist scriptures. During the Buddha's lifetime, under King Prasenajit, it flourished as a political and economic center, but declined with the fall of the Kosala kingdom (early 5th century BCE). Today, ruins have been excavated in Sahet Mahet in Uttar Pradesh. The Jetavana Vihara, where Buddha often stayed, was donated to the Buddhist sect by Sudatta, a wealthy merchant in this city, who bought Prince Jeta's garden and donated it to the Buddhist sect.
