Itapua is the capital of the department of Itapua in the southeast of the eastern region (east of the Paraguay River) of Paraguay. It is a river port city on the Paraná River, which forms the border with Argentina, about 300 km southeast of the capital Asuncion, and faces Posadas across the river. It was founded in 1632 by Jesuit missionaries. It is now one of the country's major cities, and as a commercial and industrial center for the surrounding agricultural areas, it distributes and processes timber, mate tea (Paraguayan tea), tobacco, cotton, corn, rice, and cattle. A ferry runs between it and Posadas on the opposite bank, and the railway and main road from the capital are connected to Argentina's railway and road network. Population: 44,064 (1990 estimate).
