A perennial plant of the Asteraceae family. It has a thick rhizome and produces several basal leaves with long stalks. The leaf blades are thick and kidney-shaped. The upper surface is deep green and glossy. From November to January, it produces thick flower stalks 50-80 cm tall with numerous flower heads in corymbs. The flower heads are composed of ray florets and tubular flowers, and have a beautiful flower diameter of 4-6 cm. The achene is 0.5-0.7 cm long and densely hairy. The pappus is dirty brown and 0.8-1.1 cm long. It grows on the coast and is distributed from Fukushima Prefecture, Ishikawa Prefecture and west of Honshu to Okinawa, the Korean Peninsula, Taiwan, and the eastern part of mainland China.

Its beautiful evergreen leaves and bloom in the winter when there are few other flowers, so it has been planted in gardens since ancient times, and there are many varieties for ornamental purposes. As a folk remedy, the leaves are rubbed or roasted over a fire to soften them, and then applied to swellings, eczema, cuts, etc. It is also used as an antidote. The name comes from the fact that the leaves are shiny and look very similar to butterbur.

キク科の多年草。根茎は太く、長い柄のある根出葉を数枚出す。葉身は質が厚く腎(じん)形。上面は深緑色でつやがある。11月~1月、高さ50~80センチメートルの太い花茎を出し、多数の頭花を散房状につける。頭花は舌状花と管状花からなり、開花径が4~6センチメートルで美しい。痩果(そうか)は長さ0.5~0.7センチメートルで、毛を密生する。冠毛は汚褐色で、長さ0.8~1.1センチメートル。海岸に生え、福島県、石川県以西の本州から沖縄、朝鮮半島、台湾および中国大陸の東部に分布する。

 葉が常緑で美しく、また花の少ない冬期に花を咲かせるので、古くから庭に植えられ、観賞用のいろいろな品種がある。民間薬としては葉をもんだり、火であぶって柔らかくし、腫(は)れ物や湿疹(しっしん)、切り傷などの上にはる。また解毒剤として用いる。名は、葉につやがありフキによく似ることによる。
