Also called thinner. A solvent used to dilute paints such as lacquer, paint, and varnish to reduce their viscosity. The conditions for use are that the resin, cellulose derivatives, and additives contained in the paint do not precipitate, that the coating does not turn white, and that the coating surface is smooth. A mixed solvent of toluene, acetate esters, alcohols, etc. is used. The organic solvent contained in thinner has a central nervous system paralysis effect, and inhaling the vapor causes intoxication, so inhaling thinner vapor became popular among Japanese youth around 1967 as a "thinner play" and became a social problem. It is addictive, and frequent inhalers show symptoms such as emotional anxiety, impaired consciousness, hallucinations, delusions, and temporary loss of consciousness. The brain and nerves are affected, making them prone to toxic psychosis. Inhaling large amounts can also cause respiratory paralysis and death. A partial revision of the Poisonous and Deleterious Substances Control Law restricted the use and sale of thinner from August 1, 1972.

うすめ液とも。ラッカー，ペイント，ワニスなどの塗料を薄めて粘度を下げるために用いる溶剤をいう。塗料に含まれる樹脂・セルロース誘導体・添加物を析出しないこと，塗膜の白化を起こさないこと，平滑な塗面を与えることなどが条件となる。トルエン，酢酸エステル類，アルコール類などの混合溶剤が用いられる。シンナーに含まれる有機溶剤には中枢神経麻痺(まひ)作用があり，蒸気吸引により酩酊(めいてい)状態になるので，シンナー蒸気吸引が1967年ごろから日本の青少年の間に〈シンナー遊び〉として流行して社会問題化。依存性があり，吸引常習者は感情不安，意識障害，幻覚，妄想，一時的意識喪失(そうしつ)などの症状が現れ，脳神経が冒されて中毒性精神病になりやすく，また大量に吸引すると呼吸麻痺を起こして死ぬこともある。毒物及び劇物取締法を一部改正し，1972年８月１日より使用，販売等を規制。
