Local names include Ebisuo (Mie), Gusoku (Wakayama, Kochi), and Ishigakiuo (Kumamoto). A marine fish of the family Ploceidae in the order Alfonsinoformes (illustration). It is widely distributed from central Honshu southwards, through the Philippines and the Indian Ocean to South Africa. Its body is rounded overall, and is covered by a hard carapace made of thick, large scales that have ridges. Its dorsal fin has five to six strong spines that can be tilted down alternately, one on each side. エビスウオ(三重),グソク(和歌山,高知),イシガキウオ(熊本)などの地方名がある。キンメダイ目マツカサウオ科の海産魚(イラスト)。本州中部以南,フィリピン,インド洋を経て南アフリカにわたり広く分布する。体は全体として丸みを帯び,厚い大きなうろこでできた堅固な甲に包まれ,うろこには隆起がある。背びれの5~6本の強い棘(きよく)は1本おきに左右互い違いに倒すことができる。腹びれにも太くて先端のとがった棘があり,その基部をこすりあわせて音を出す。
