Japanese: コオロギ(蟋蟀) - コオロギ（英語表記）cricket

A colloquial name used to refer to insects in the superfamily Grylloidea in the order Orthoptera. The mole cricket is also a member of this group, but is often treated separately. The old name for the Japanese grasshopper was Koorogi. Crickets are a major group that makes up the order Orthoptera, along with katydids and grasshoppers, and are particularly closely related to katydids. Katydids have a vertically flattened body shape and are primarily adapted to arboreal life, but crickets, such as the emma cricket, have a dorsally flattened body shape and are adapted to terrestrial life.

直翅目コオロギ上科Grylloideaに属する昆虫を呼ぶときに用いる通俗的な呼名。ケラもこの仲間だが，別に扱うことも多い。またツヅレサセコオロギの旧名をコオロギといった。　コオロギ類は，キリギリス類やバッタ類とともに直翅目を構成する主要な群で，とくにキリギリス類に類縁が近い。キリギリス類は体型が縦に平たく，主として樹上生活に適応しているが，コオロギ類は，エンマコオロギで代表されるように，体型が背腹に平たくなり，地表生活に適応している。
