This type of coal mining machine uses a double chain conveyor laid along the face as a guide, and pulls a machine (the hovel body) with a vertical arrangement of wedge-shaped blades with a chain, cutting the coal wall like a plane. When it was first put into practical use, a hoist was placed in the tunnel at the entrance to the face, and the hovel was pulled at a speed of 6 to 8 meters per minute, cutting the coal wall to a depth of about 30 cm.
