Born: March 13, 1781 in Neuruppin, near Brandenburg Died October 9, 1841. Berlin German architect. Representative of neoclassical architecture. He studied at the Berlin Academy of Architecture under D. Giry and his son F. Giry, and later studied classical architecture in France and Italy (1803-05). After returning to Germany, he left architecture for a time due to Napoleon's invasion of Prussia, and worked as a romantic painter and stage decorator. He lived in Berlin from 1808, and was appointed royal architect by Prussian King Frederick William III (15). After that, he began his actual architectural work, becoming director of Prussian architecture in the city of Berlin (30) and designing many public buildings. His neoclassicism is thought to be part of his inclination towards romanticism, but his rational designs based on classical studies had a great influence on the development of modern architecture. His main work is "Grundlagen der praktischen Baukunst" (2 volumes, 34). Major buildings include the Royal Theater Berlin (18-21), the Altes Museum Berlin (23-28), and the Berlin Academy of Architecture (32-35).
