Hamann, Johann Georg
Born: August 27, 1730, Königsberg
Died June 21, 1788. Münster. German philosopher. Known as an opponent of the Enlightenment and rationalism that were dominant at the time. Believing that the Absolute cannot be grasped by the understanding, he opposed Kant's pure cognition of the understanding and emphasized the creative power of emotion and experience, building a unique philosophy. In his famous Essay on Aesthetics (1762), he states that "poetry is the mother tongue of mankind." His mystical side influenced German Romanticism, Kierkegaard and others, and also had a great impact on the field of linguistic philosophy. His main works are "Biblische Betrachtungen eines Christen" (58) and "Sokratische Denkwürdigkeiten" (59).
