...Scientists also formed new academic societies to promote scientific research and to promote its significance to society. The forerunner of this type of society was the German Society of Scientists and Physicians (Gesellschaft deutscher Naturforscher und Ärzte), which was founded in 1822 by German biologist Lorenz Oken (1779-1851). The purpose of this society was to stimulate the rigid and stagnant old academies and universities by having scientists from all over Germany gather in a certain city once a year to exchange the results of their research.
