Japanese: 浮秤 - うきばかり

A type of hydrometer. A glass or metal tube with a bulge at the bottom to increase buoyancy and a weight attached underneath so that it floats upright in the liquid. The higher the specific gravity of the liquid being measured, the higher it will rise, so the specific gravity is determined by reading the liquid level on the scale engraved on the top. Examples include the Baume hydrometer, the sugar meter that measures sugar content, and the milk meter that measures the fat content of milk. Nicholson's hydrometer has no scale and is used to measure the specific gravity of solids by placing a weight on it and submerging it to a certain depth.

液体比重計の一種。ガラスまたは金属の管の下部にふくらみをつけて浮力を増し，その下におもりをつけ，液中に直立して浮くようにしたもの。測定する液の比重が大きいほど浮き上がるから，液面を上部にきざんだ目盛で読んで比重を知る。ボーメ比重計，砂糖の含有量を測る検糖計，牛乳の脂肪含有量を測る牛乳計などがその例。ニコルソンの浮秤は目盛がなく，分銅をのせて一定の深さに沈める仕組みで，おもに固体の比重を測る。
