A type of hydrometer. A glass or metal tube with a bulge at the bottom to increase buoyancy and a weight attached underneath so that it floats upright in the liquid. The higher the specific gravity of the liquid being measured, the higher it will rise, so the specific gravity is determined by reading the liquid level on the scale engraved on the top. Examples include the Baume hydrometer, the sugar meter that measures sugar content, and the milk meter that measures the fat content of milk. Nicholson's hydrometer has no scale and is used to measure the specific gravity of solids by placing a weight on it and submerging it to a certain depth. → Related itemsScales | Gravimeter Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
